Shooting Incident Investigation Involving Alec Baldwin Continues

According to the director who was injured in the shooting, Joel Souza, the shot that killed a cinematographer on the set of last week’s New Mexico film was fired by actor Alec Baldwin while practicing with his gun.

Souza, director of the film “Rust” was shot in the shoulder while photographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, died after the gun was fired during rehearsal at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe last Thursday.

According to Souza’s statement released by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, which is conducting the investigation, the incident occurred while Baldwin was sitting on a pew in the church building where the filming was set and rehearsing his performance. cross draw. Cross draw is the act of pulling a weapon from its holster on the opposite side of the body and then opening fire.

Baldwin himself had no idea that the gun contained real bullets, fatally wounding Hutchins and injuring Souza’s shoulder.

Investigators also spoke with camera operator Reid Russell, who was standing beside Souza and Hutchins at the time of the incident.

Both Souza and Russell acknowledged that there was a problem on set that day due to a strike by some of their members in the camera department over payments and housing. It was because of labor issues that, Souza said, they only had one camera available for use that day, and the camera itself was not operating at the time of the incident.

Souza also confirmed to investigators that he heard the cry “cold gun” on the set, which means the gun is safe because it doesn’t have bullets.

According to Souza, three people had handled the gun for the purposes of the film’s scene. They are weapons stewards, first assistant directors and user actors.

When asked how Baldwin handled the firearm, Russell told investigators that the actor was “very careful” and recalled previous incidents when Baldwin “made sure it was safe” and that no children were nearby when the gun was fired during the scene.

The search warrant attempted to obtain footage, video cameras, computer equipment and memory cards used by cameras on the set.

None have been submitted yet. The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office said it would discuss the case further at a press conference Wednesday.

Legal expert Nina Marino believes the gun incident involving Alec Baldwin did not involve a criminal act. He predicted that Baldwin would not face criminal charges because he was given the weapon that the assistant director had announced was cold gun.

According to him, New Mexico will also not file criminal charges because it could have a detrimental effect on the state’s filmmaking industry. When asked Associated Press, whether Baldwin and the producers could finish “Rust,” Marino said: “I think it can, should and will continue.”

Baldwin has not yet agreed to be interviewed by reporters. In a statement on Twitter he said: “There are no words to express my shock and sadness at the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and our co-worker whom we greatly admire. I fully cooperate with the police investigation to uncover this tragedy.” [ab/uh]
