Russian Citizens Now Have To Go To Warsaw To Apply For US Visa

Russian citizens who wish to apply for an immigrant visa to the United States are now required to visit the US Embassy in Warsaw, Poland, the US State Department said Sunday.

The developments come amid growing tensions between the US and Russia, and the expulsion that previously led to Moscow restricting US diplomatic staff in Russia.

Russia condemned the US move regarding the visa application process, prompting a strong response from Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

US diplomats, he wrote on Telegram, have long “destroyed” the system of consular services in Russia, causing routine procedures to “feel like hell.”

Meanwhile, the US State Department blamed Moscow for this.

“The Russian government’s decision to bar the United States from retaining, employing or contracting Russian or third-country staff severely affects our ability to provide consular services,” a State Department spokesman said in a statement received by AFP.

Warsaw is located about 1,200 kilometers from Moscow.

For the time being, the US Embassy in Moscow can only process “diplomatic or official visas.” [vm/ft]
