Two people were killed and at least nine others injured in a laboratory explosion at the eastern China’s Nanjing Aeronautics and Astronautics University, state media said Monday. The explosion occurred Sunday (24/10) afternoon.
Officials are investigating the cause of the explosion at the university’s Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said. Until this news was revealed, the identity of the victims had not been revealed.
Nanjing has long been known as a major center of higher education which attracts many foreign students.
The faculty’s website says more than 1,000 foreign students have studied there in engineering, business and Chinese. However, it is unclear how many foreign students will remain after China began imposing travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
China is trying to establish itself as a major player in global aviation and spaceflight, although its efforts to produce commercial jets have not had a significant impact. [ab/ka]
