The police investigation Saturday (23/10) into the fatal shooting with a property gun by actor Alec Baldwin on the set of the film focused on the specialist in charge of the gun and the assistant director who handed it over to Baldwin.
42-year-old Ukrainian-born cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot in the chest and died shortly after Thursday’s incident in New Mexico. Director Joel Souza, 48, who was behind Hutchins, was injured and hospitalized, then allowed to go home.
The police interrogated Baldwin, who agreed to cooperate. Police have yet to drop charges.
Souza said in a statement Saturday that he was “devastated” by the loss of friends and colleagues. “He is kind, cheerful, very talented, always fighting and always pushing me to be better,” he told Deadline, an entertainment news site.
The incident sparked intense speculation on social media about how such an accident could have happened, despite strict gun safety protocols on set. [vm/ft]
