In a virtual meeting with the White House COVID-19 Response Team, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky clarified who was eligible for the booster injection. Those who initially received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine were deemed eligible for a booster shot if they were 65 years of age and over, and had had their second dose six months ago. Other groups deemed eligible were adults living in long-term care facilities, people with a previous medical condition and people living or working in high-risk settings.

In addition, people who have received a single dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine two months or more ago are also eligible for a booster shot.

Walensky said the FDA and CDC recommendations also allow people to choose the official type of COVID-19 vaccine for booster shots, regardless of which vaccine they received previously.

When asked if this expanded list of booster injections required an update to the definition of “full vaccination” previously defined by the CDC, Walensky replied that the CDC has not changed that definition, but that it may be necessary in the future.

People in America are currently considered fully vaccinated if they have received two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, or one dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine. [em/rs]
