Zoe Saldana Introduces Latin American Culture through Netflix Animated Films

The film series ‘Maya and the Three’, which can be seen on streaming service Netflix starting October 22, is based on a Latin American cultural mythology that tells the story of the struggle of four heroes to overcome criminal gangsters.

At the beginning of each episode, Saldaña’s name is shown with a winding sign above the ‘n’. Saldana says the sign has a special meaning, “It happened when I was a child. My name was changed. My kindergarten teacher said you are not Saldaña, the letter ‘n’ with the winding sign is not in our English so we can’t pronounce it. Since I was a child, I don’t know how much impact that statement had on me. I didn’t know the importance of the meaning of a name until I was old enough. Our names are everything, right?”

In Spanish, which is common in Latin America, the letter ‘n’ with a twisting mark is pronounced like “ny”. Therefore Saldaña with an ‘n’ accompanied by a sinuous sign, should be read as Saldanya.

Unfortunately, Hollywood is more familiar with this artist as Saldana, not Saldanya. At least it is seen in film projects involving his name such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. He wanted the pronunciation of his name to change.

“This is important. My real name was removed from me and I want to have it back. I want to see my name pronounced as it is written on my birth certificate,” he explained.

Saldaña believes that animations like ‘Maya and the Three’ will help viewers understand Latin American culture.

Unlike conventional Hollywood animated films, this series contains a lot of death. A number of characters are depicted dead or killed in this film.

This is because Latin culture celebrates death, not avoids it, says Saldaña.

“We normalized the inevitable that no human, tree or animal could ever escape death. So why should we try to avoid talking about it? Getting into the habit of talking about death at an early age, I think, will lead us to lead a better life. more meaningful,” he explained. [ab/ka]
