Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Thursday (21/10) rejected the allegations laid out in a Senate report. He said the accusations should be dismissed.
The report, which was read in the Senate on Wednesday, said among other things that Bolsonaro committed crimes against humanity for allegedly being careless in his response to COVID-19, which contributed to the country’s second-highest death toll in the world.
“People who have used lies in the past keep targeting my seat and keep trying to depose me all the time,” the Brazilian president said in a live broadcast on social media and radio stations.
His comments marked his first speech since the report of the Senate commission investigation was released. The investigation lasted six months.
Senator Renan Calheiros of the commission called for Bolsonaro’s indictment on charges ranging from fraud and incitement to crime to misappropriation of public funds and crimes against humanity.
The decision on whether or not most of the charges will be filed in court will be up to Brazil’s attorney general, an official appointed by Bolsonaro and widely seen as protecting the president. [ka/ab]
