US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday accused Russia of destabilizing the Black Sea region in an attempt to regain dominance in the area. He spoke at a press conference in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, with the country’s defense minister Nicolae Ciuca.
“This region is vulnerable to Russian aggression, and we have seen evidence of this with ongoing actions in eastern Ukraine, the partial occupation of Georgia and the militarization of the Black Sea and provocative actions in the air and at sea,” Austin said.
He added that he would discuss “lessons learned from Afghanistan” when he travels from Romania to Brussels, where he will meet NATO defense ministers. [ka/ab]
