North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile from Submarine

Fears of an arms race on the Korean Peninsula rose on Tuesday (19/10). North Korea conducted its eighth major weapons test this year. This time with a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile). SLBM that would add an unpredictable component to North Korea’s arsenal. The missiles are easier to move around and easier to hide.

This is not the first time North Korea has tested an SLBM. But this is the first trial in two years. The timing is right. The test comes just a month after South Korea launched its own SLBM. Within two days, South Korea attempted to launch its first self-made space rocket.

South Korea, which hosts about 28,000 US troops, is building its military so it can take more part in its own defence. However, North Korea views the move as provocative.

One observer, Seoul-based Park Won-gon, said North Korea was using South Korea’s test launch as a justification for its own nuclear development.

North Korea is banned from ballistic missile activities by a series of UN Security Council resolutions.

The resolution was made to punish North Korea for its outlawed nuclear program.

In North Korea’s view, the resolution is an example of America and its allies applying double standards.

US envoy to North Korea, Sung Kim, Monday (18/10), in Washington, repeated the US offer to resume talks aimed at making progress on denuclearization.

“The United States continues to work for Pyongyang to resume dialogue. Our meaning remains the same. We do not mean to be hostile to North Korea, and we are open to meeting them without preconditions, ”he said.

In a speech last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un rejected the US offer and said there was no evidence the US had abandoned what he called its “hostile” policy. [ps/jm]
