Haitian police have accused a gang that often carries out kidnappings and murders of kidnapping 17 missionaries from an organization from the United States (US). In this incident, five children were allegedly kidnapped.
Police on Sunday said the Mawozo gang of 400 kidnapped the group in Ganthier, an area east of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
The gang’s name means 400 “inexperienced men.”
The gang controls the area of Croix-des-Bouquets which includes Ganthier. Authorities say in the area gang members carry out various kidnappings, carjackings and extortion of business owners.
Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries said the kidnapped group consisted of 16 US citizens and one Canadian. In total there were five children, seven girls and five boys.
The organization said the 17 people were on their way to an orphanage when the incident took place. (vm/ft)
