After 19 years, the Indonesian national badminton team was finally able to bring the Thomas Cup back to Indonesia.
Indonesia celebrated the extraordinary victory after beating China 3-0 in a match at Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark, Sunday (17/10).
In the first party, Indonesia’s mainstay single player, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, defeated Lu Guangzu with a score of 18-21, 21-14 and 21-16.
In the second party, Indonesia took the lead again after Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto defeated the Chinese pair He Jiting and Zhou Ho Dong in straight sets 21-12 and 21-19.
Jonatan Christie locked Indonesia’s victory in the third party after stopping LI Shi Feng’s resistance with rubber games 21-14, 18-21 and 21-14.
“This is an extraordinary atmosphere because this is also one of our dreams from childhood to compete in the Thomas Cup and now we can contribute points for Indonesia in the final. Indeed one of our goals is to win this Thomas Cup after 19 years. (The taste is) so amazing!” said Fajar Alfian as quoted from Reuters after the match.
Jonathan Christie said the same thing after defeating Li Shi Feng.
“I am proud to be an Indonesian citizen. I also want to thank Anthony who started 1-0, and Fajar-Ardian who made it 2-0. So I became more confident when I played in the third match. I also saw Li in the first half looked nervous, so I took the opportunity,” he said, as quoted from Associated Press.
As if to represent the tension when watching the Indonesian national team match in the Thomas Cup competition and the relief when he managed to bring home the prestigious trophy, President Joko Widodo wrote on his Instagram: “The Thomas Cup is finally back in Indonesia after 19 years of waiting.”
It delivers congratulations to all the athletes and coaches who have fought hard. [em/ft]
