Dozens Died in Explosion at Shia Mosque in Afghanistan

An explosion that occurred at a Shia mosque in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, on Friday (15/10) killed at least 47 people and injured more than 70, according to information provided by a Taliban official.

The explosion occurred during Friday prayers. Pictures and videos circulating on social media show the bloody events inside the mosque. There were injured victims and congregants trying to save the victims.

Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi confirmed to FLY that the bomb attack in Kandahar “killed and injured a number of compatriots.” He said an investigation into the violence was ongoing “to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”

The head of the Taliban’s culture and information department in Kandahar, Hafiz Sayeed, told the news agency Associated Press at least 47 people were killed and at least 70 injured in the incident.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. (ka/rs)
