US military officials warned Tuesday that China’s continued campaign to pressure Taiwan will only increase the chances of wrongdoing and, possibly, unintentional fighting.
The Pentagon has accused Beijing of increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, warning that the “provocative” tactics could backfire on China.
“The People’s Republic of China has stepped up efforts to intimidate, pressure Taiwan and other allies and partners, including increasing their military activities carried out around Taiwan, the East China Sea and the South China Sea, which we believe are destabilizing and only increasing risk of miscalculation,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters, adding that America’s commitment to Taiwan remains “steadfast.”
China’s growing public push to reunite Taiwan and the country has sparked a bitter dispute. Taiwan’s leaders want to maintain the island as a self-governing sovereign entity. (ka/lt)
