The fight for custody of the only child who survived the cable car crash continues

A court hearing in a bitter custody dispute over a six-year-old boy, the sole survivor of a cable car crash in Italy, resumes in Tel Aviv, Israel, Sunday (10/10).

All of the poor child’s immediate family died in the accident.

Eltan Biran was the sole survivor of a cable car crash on a mountainside in northern Italy last May, which killed 14 people, including his parents and younger brother.

The child has been at the center of a custody battle between his maternal grandparents in Israel and his paternal relatives in Italy since his grandfather Shmulik Peleg brought him to Israel in September.

Family in Italy say Eltan was taken without their knowledge. Meanwhile relatives in Israel insist they are acting in the boy’s best interests and deny that they have violated the law.

Those present at the trial on Sunday (10/10) were Eltan’s aunt, Aya Biran, who lives in Italy. Aya Biran in September submitted a formal request to the Italian court system to reclaim the child.

Also present was Shmulik Peleg, who admitted that he had taken Eltan to Switzerland before flying him back to Israel. [em/jm]
