An opera artist at Russia’s legendary Bolshoi Theater has died in an accident on stage during an opera performance, the Moscow-based company says.
The theater said the incident took place Saturday in the midst of changing sets for Sadko, a 19th-century opera by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
“The live performance was stopped, and the audience was asked to leave the room,” the theater’s press release told the news agency Interfax.
The Moscow Investigative Committee said in a statement that it was investigating the 37-year-old artist’s death.
They did not name the victim, but said he sustained injuries and died before the ambulance arrived.
Citing a source, Interfax reported that the man fell on a property while changing sets.
The accident is not the first tragedy to befall the famous Moscow theater.
In 2013, a senior violinist died after falling into an orchestra pit. (vm / jm)
