Bomb Targets Yemeni Officials, At Least 6 Killed

At least six people were killed in a car bomb explosion that targeted two senior Yemeni government officials in the port city of Aden, Sunday (10/10). These two senior officials survived.

Information Minister Moammar Al-Iryani said the blast targeted a convoy of Agriculture Minister Salem Al-Socotrai and Aden Governor Ahmed Lamlas in Tawahi district.

The explosion killed at least six people, including several people accompanying Lamlas and injured at least seven others who happened to be passing by. The injured have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Several security officers who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media said the explosion damaged several buildings in the area, which were immediately blocked by security forces.

Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed called the blast a “terrorist attack” and ordered an investigation.

No one has yet claimed responsibility.

In recent years Aden has been rocked by a series of bomb blasts, some of which are blamed on Al Qaeda affiliates and the Islamic State terrorist group. [em/jm]
