Benson Kipruto Wins Boston Marathon

Benson Kipruto of Kenya won the Boston Marathon, which was delayed by 30 months due to the coronavirus pandemic and has now been moved to the fall, the first in 125 years.

Autumn leaves replace spring lilies, and masks replace mylar in the Hopkinton to Boston race.

Even though organizers enforced strict COVID-19 protocols and asked spectators to keep their distance, crowds of people lined the 26.2-mile stretch from Hopkinton to Boston.

Rain and temperatures in the mid-50s Celsius greeted participants at the Hopkinton Green starting line. The audience witnessed how Kipruto ran and broke the record of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 51 seconds when he reached the finish line. Diana Kipyogei was the female winner, and the eighth Kenyan to win the competition since 2000.

For the first time since it was held in 1897, last year’s Boston Marathon was cancelled. [em/jm]
