Malaysia opens borders, lifts travel ban for citizens

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Sunday (10/10), said Malaysia reopened its borders for domestic and international travel of its citizens who have been fully vaccinated.

“Now I want to convey and announce that interstate travel will be allowed by the government and this freedom will begin tomorrow,” Prime Minister Yaakob said.

This policy is also expected to restore the tourism industry and boost the country’s economy.

In a televised speech on Sunday, Prime Minister Yaakob called the repeal related to citizen vaccinations.

Malaysia says most of its population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“According to the Ministry of Health, the adult vaccination rate based on the national immunization plan has reached 90%,” he said.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said fully vaccinated Malaysians could now travel to other states for holidays and return to their hometowns. In addition, citizens are also now free to travel abroad without requiring approval, but they will still have to undergo virus tests and quarantine upon return.

Yaakob also said the government was still assessing the situation to decide whether it was safe to reopen the country’s borders to foreigners.

Malaysia had previously faced the worst wave of COVID-19 for which authorities imposed a strict nationwide lockdown.

Declining cases and incessant immunizations have led authorities to begin lifting previous restrictions. Companies and businesses were allowed to reopen while workers slowly returned to work.

Malaysia, with a population of 32 million, has recorded more than 2.3 million cases and 27,000 deaths. In August alone the country recorded 20,000 cases of COVID-19 in a day and hundreds of deaths, but the rush of vaccines has slowed infections. [my/lt]
