White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan will meet China’s top diplomat in Switzerland this week, the White House said Tuesday.
Sullivan’s meeting with Yang Jiechi on Wednesday (6/10) in Zurich took place amid rising tensions between the two superpowers. Issues around trade, Taiwan’s sovereignty, and various other issues have raised tensions between the two countries.
The meeting was aimed at fulfilling the promises made by the two countries to improve communication.
“They will follow up on the results of talks between President Biden and President Xi Jinping on September 9, as we continue our efforts to responsibly manage the competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China,” the White House said in a statement.
This is Sullivan’s first meeting with Yang since the two exchanged criticism at a previous meeting in Alaska in March.
Previously, there had been no communication between the leaders of the two countries for the past seven months until Biden finally spoke with Xi in early September. In the telephone conversation, the two presidents discussed how important it is not to allow the rivalry between the two countries to escalate into conflict. (jm / em)
