Swedish news media reported that controversial artist Lars Vilks died in a traffic accident.
Vilks is an artist who has drawn sketches that some Muslims consider insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. He has received death threats since 2007 and lives under police protection.
Media reports said a truck collided with a traffic police car in which Vilks and the police were traveling.
News agency TT said police confirmed that Vilks, 75, was in the car with two police officers.
Daily Today’s News said the artist’s partner had confirmed his death. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
Vilks was previously unknown outside Sweden until he drew sketches that were deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. (vm/pp)
