President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal said the workers agreed to revive the Labor Party which was founded by the late Muchtar Pakpahan.
There are at least four major confederations that will revive this party, namely KSPI, the Confederation of All-Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI), the Congress of the Alliance of Indonesian Trade Unions (KASBI), and the Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Struggle (KPBI). In addition, there are 50 federations of trade unions, farmers’ unions, and thunder organizations that will also join the party.
“The decisive defeat of workers, farmers, fishermen, teachers, environmental activists and human rights activists with the ratification” all law The job creation law is one of the main factors in reviving the Labor Party,” said Said Iqbal in an online press conference, Sunday (3/10).
He added that the Labor Party, which will be re-declared at the Congress in Jakarta on October 4-5, 2021, is ready to take part in the 2024 General Election. Said said this can be seen from the readiness of the Labor Party to participate in the election. According to him, currently the party already has 100 percent management at the national level, 80 percent at the district/city level, and 49 percent at the sub-district level.
“We are not grandiose as a party that hopefully can pass the verification by the KPU and parliamentary threshold to revive the Labor Party,” Iqbal added.
Iqbal said that the Labor Party’s budget will come from membership dues so that it is independent. According to him, the pattern of financing from these contributions is common in labor unions.
General Secretary of the Central Executive Board (DPP) of the Indonesian Peasants’ Union (SPI) Agus Ruli Ardiansyah supports Said Iqbal as the General Chair of the Labor Party which will be re-declarated on October 4, 2021. However, he asked the deputy chairman to come from a number of labor organizations that joined the Labor Party. this.
“The vice president (chairman) also has representatives of farmers, fishermen, and women. This is a form of association and a differentiating alternative with other parties,” explained Agus Ruli.
Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) researcher Siti Zuhro assesses that it is not easy to establish a new party. The reason is that the conditions set by the KPU are quite heavy and must pass the parliamentary threshold of 4 percent. He also reminded that no new party could enter parliament in the 2019 election.
In addition, he said, workers’ voters were spread across a number of other parties, such as Gerindra and the PDI-P. Therefore, said Siti, the Labor Party needs to work hard to be able to compete in the 2024 election.
“The more parties, the more votes that are contested, that’s all. So for newcomers, the effort is extraordinary to double up to convince the voters of this new party,” explained Siti Zuhro to FLY, Sunday (3/10).
Siti Zuhro added that there are a number of factors that will determine the people’s choice of the Labor Party, including the party’s program and legislative candidates. [sm/ah]
