Declaration of Support for the 2024 Presidential Election Candidates: Popularity, Loyalty and Reality

The 2024 presidential election is still three years away, but political figures are starting to stir. Photographs of half bodies plastered flashy on the main streets. Not infrequently some national political figures blusukan to the village while distributing social assistance.

The chairman of the Golkar Party, Airlangga Hartarto, took the time to visit a residential area in Solo last week. The group repeatedly introduced Airlangga to residents as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

FLY also received a video recording containing the support of party cadres bearing the banyan tree logo with Airlangga as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. “Golkar Indonesia. Golkar wins. Golkar wins. Airlangga Hartarto President. Airlangga Hartarto President,” shouted the people in the recording. that video.

A similar condition happened to the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo. This week there have been many declarations of volunteer support for the PDIP cadres who are running for the 2024 presidential election. Ganjar volunteers in 17 districts have declared their support.

Boosting Popularity

Billboards with pictures of national political figures are easy to see and they are installed in various regions. This method is still considered effective in introducing national political figures. There were billboards with a photo of Puan Maharani and the PDI-Perjuangan logo, Airlangga Hartarto with the Golkar Party logo, to Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono AHY with the Democratic Party logo.

Meanwhile, Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, and Ridwan Kamil use social media to boost their popularity.

Not all national political figures openly hint at running for the 2024 presidential election. Airlangga Hartarto, is reluctant to comment on the opportunity to run in the 2024 presidential election. The 2024 political year, said Airlangga, is still a long time away.

“Not political. It’s 2021, 2024 is still a long time away,” said Airlangga in Solo, Thursday (23/9).

Popularity, Electability and Loyalty

Threshold or presidential threshold to be able to nominate presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates for parties is if they win at least 20 percent of the parliamentary seats, or 115 seats in the DPR.

The PDI-Perjuangan has 128 seats in the DPR and is the single party that has the opportunity to carry out candidates without a coalition.

Other political parties that have the opportunity but need to form a coalition in this nomination include: Golkar Party with 85 seats, Gerindra Party with 78 seats, Nasdem Party with 59 seats, PKB Party with 58 seats, Democratic Party with 54 seats, PKS with 50 seats, PAN with 44 seats and PPP. 19 seats.

The presidential election stage will begin in July 2022 or 20 months before voting in 2024.

So far, political parties are still choosing a cautious attitude. When various supports emerged for Ganjar Pranowo to run in the 2024 presidential election, PDI-Perjuangan – the party where Ganjar took refuge – warned by conveying the potential for sanctions for cadres who were determined to garner support before PDI-Perjuangan General Chair Megawati Sukarnoputri determined her preferred candidate.

When visiting Solo on September 21, Ganjar said he left all political decisions to the party mechanism. “We will solve the impact of this pandemic completely and completely. The other matters have been explained. Anyway, the story of the presidential candidate has been determined by the party, Mrs. Mega will later,” said Ganjar.

He underlined his determination as Governor of Central Java to focus on efforts to tackle the pandemic first, which he said had a “serious impact on people’s economic conditions, education and health.”

Election Law Does Not Know Independent Candidates

Political observer from Sebelas Maret University UNS Solo, Dr. Agus Riewanto said boosting the popularity of political figures through conventional methods through billboards to new ways on social media is a natural step. According to Agus, popularity and electability are capital for political parties to see opportunities to carry candidates.

The decisions of political parties and the results of candidate surveys which are often contradictory, said Agus, are a reality that must be accepted. This is where the loyalty of candidates as political party cadres is being tested, he said.

“In the political process, you don’t just need to be famous, right. Political parties determine the decisions of their candidates in the presidential election. The assumption is that popularity will be remembered by the public and the chances of being elected in the 2024 presidential election. Popularity can be through multimedia from billboards to social media,” Agus said when contacted FLY.

Agus, who had served as chairman of the Sragen KPU, added that the political dynamics of the 2024 presidential election is still long. It remains to be seen whether the coalition of parties in Jokowi’s government will remain in the comfort zone with the PDI-Perjuangan or the turmoil can be seen in the next year.

Agus explained that the regulation does not provide an opportunity for leaders from an independent path to advance in the 2024 presidential election, so that only political parties have an important role in the mechanism of the five-year democratic party.

“Independent candidates are not known in the presidential election. Article 6 of the 1945 Constitution states that the President and Vice President are proposed pairs by political parties or a combination of political parties. Independent candidates cannot run in the presidential election. This has been locked down by regulations and the constitution. Unlike the Pilkada, independent paths are opened, ” said this constitutional law lecturer. [ys/em]
