Militant Raid Kills 5 Soldiers in Pakistan

Authorities in Pakistan confirmed Saturday that an overnight raid on a convoy of vehicles in the northwestern part of the country had killed five paramilitary troops.

A military statement said “clearance operations are underway to eradicate any terrorists found in the area” in North Waziristan, a vulnerable district near the country’s border with Afghanistan.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), dubbed the Pakistani Taliban, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the deadly raid.

The TTP, an alliance of extremist groups, has carried out terrorist attacks in Pakistan for years, killing thousands of civilians and security forces.

Pakistan has carried out ongoing military operations against the group’s bases near the Afghan border, killing thousands of militants and forcing others to flee to Afghanistan.

The security action, officials said, had significantly reduced the militant threat and led to a reduction in violence.

However, TTP attacks have increased in recent weeks, mainly in the northwestern and southeastern parts of the country, killing dozens of security personnel. [vm/ft]
