Eruption Attracts Tourists to Hawaii Volcano Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park estimates tens of thousands of visitors will flock to the park because of the new eruption of the Kilauea volcano. The US Geological Survey confirmed Wednesday that an eruption had begun in the Halemaumau crater at the volcano’s summit.

Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said the location where the eruption occurred was not close to where people could hike or drive. The path to the eruption has been closed for years.

Jessica Ferracane says, “We love it when we’re out here in the park, and it’s kind of a ‘safe eruption,’ but by no means harmless. All volcanoes can be dangerous. One of the biggest dangers right now is the plume of gas escaping from it.”

David Brunovskis, a visitor from Chicago said his arrival time was just right so he could witness the desert eruption. “It felt amazing, so coincidental, like total luck, because we were fascinated by the volcano so actually being here when it erupted was incredible,” he added.

Ferracane said the volcanic gases could be dangerous to nearby communities, depending on the wind direction. [lt/uh]
