UN Security Council Meets to Discuss Situation in North Korea

Members of the UN Security Council are scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the current situation in North Korea, diplomats said, after Pyongyang admitted it had carried out its latest hypersonic glide missile test.

This test is the latest real advance in the development of North Korean weapons technology.

News agency AFP reported that the meeting, which was held at the request of the United States (US), Britain and France, was expected to take place behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly denounced the US offer of dialogue as a bogus offer and accused the Joe Biden administration of continuing a hostile policy towards his country.

Talks between Pyongyang and Washington have largely stalled since the collapse of the Hanoi Conference where Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump met to discuss sanctions relief against North Korea and what North Korea is willing to do in exchange for those waivers.

In recent months, the United States has repeatedly offered to meet North Korean representatives anywhere, anytime, without preconditions, while saying it will continue to work towards denuclearization.

But Kim condemned the declaration “as nothing more than a mask to cover up fraud and acts of hostility and an extension of hostile policies from past governments”, the Rodong Sinmun, North Korea’s official newspaper. (my/jm)
