YouTube will Block Vaccine Misinformation Content

YouTube will block any video that claims vaccines are ineffective or harmful, including those that question the measles and chickenpox vaccines.

In a blog announcing the enforcement of the new measures Wednesday, YouTube stated “in particular, content that falsely alleges that approved vaccines are harmful and have chronic health effects, claims that vaccines do not reduce the spread or transmission of disease, or contains false information about the substance contained in the vaccine – will be removed.”

It added, “Vaccines have been a source of heated debate for years, despite consistent guidance from health authorities about their effectiveness.”

“Today we are expanding our policy on medical misinformation on YouTube with new guidelines on vaccines currently being administered, which have been approved and confirmed to be safe and effective by local authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO),” the statement said.

The company said it “will continue to allow content about vaccine policy, trials of new vaccines, and history of vaccine success or failure.”

YouTube’s policy on vaccine policy has been met with strong backlash for being too aggressive.
