New Violence in Ecuadorian Prisons, 24 Convicts Killed

Ecuadorian officials continue to closely monitor a prison in the city of Guayaquil after riots there killed 24 inmates and injured 48 others.

Police and members of the military brought the situation back under control at the prison in the coastal city after a five-hour riot, according to a statement from the Ecuadorian Prison Service.

According to authorities, the rioting was caused by a dispute between gangs in prison, Los Lobos and Los Choneros. Television images showed inmates opening fire from prison windows amid smoke and the sound of gunfire and explosives.

In July, President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency in Ecuador’s prison system after several violent incidents that killed more than 100 inmates.

The bloodiest violence occurred in February when 79 inmates died in riots that took place at three prisons in the country. [uh/lt]
