Death toll in prison riots in Ecuador rises to 30

A scuffle between gangs inside a prison in the coastal city of Guayaquil, killed at least 30 inmates and injured 47 others.

Ecuador’s National Police shared footage of several weapons and drug packages seized in an attempt to regain control of the prison.

Police Commander Fausto Buenano told reporters that during the operation, officers had acted with “non-lethal weapons.”

“After successfully controlling the situation and responding to the incident in the prison yesterday, we calculated that there were 30 inmates died, 47 were injured, all of whom were immediately treated by medical officers from the Ministry of Health. The National Police have entered the scene and are now in control of prison sections 1, 3 and 5 where there are many victims,” Fausto said.

The violence, which involved gunfire, knife stabs and explosions, was caused by a dispute between the prison gangs “Los Lobos” and “Los Choneros.”

Television images showed how some inmates opened fire from prison windows amid smoke and explosions of pik guns and explosives.

The Guayas state government posted photos on Twitter showing six cooks being evacuated from one of the prison’s wings.

Last July, President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency in Ecuador’s prison system, following several violent incidents in which more than 100 inmates were killed.

The bloodiest day came in February, when 79 inmates died in simultaneous riots in three of the country’s prisons. [em/jm]
