A boat carrying hundreds of migrants arrives at the port of the Italian island of Lampedusa, on Monday (27/9) evening.
Officials say there are 686 migrants on boats escorted to the port on the island of Lampedusa by coastguards. Activities to move migrants from the ship to the reception center on the island continued until early Tuesday (28/9).
Lampedusa has a housing complex for migrants who reached the island after being rescued from boats that were not seaworthy.
Asylum requests by many migrants are often denied by Italy unless they can prove they are fleeing war and conflict or other persecution, not poverty.
Earlier this month, the Italian Coast Guard rescued 125 migrants who were seen huddled on the rocky shore of a small uninhabited island after one of the two boats they were using partially sank near Lampedusa. [lt/uh]
