Train derails in Montana, at least three people die

U.S. authorities said Sunday at least three people died when an Amtrak train running between Seattle and Chicago derailed in northern Montana.

This accident occurred on Saturday (25/9) afternoon. Emergency Services Coordinator in Liberty County, Montana, Sarah Robbin said an investigation was ongoing and five people with injuries were being treated at a hospital near the crash site.

“Currently a joint investigation is underway with BNSF, Amtrak and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). We ask people to stay away from the crash site until the investigation is complete,” Robbin said.

The Empire Builder train derailed around 4 p.m. near Joplin, a town about 30 miles south of the Canadian border. Amtrak said the train was carrying around 141 passengers and 16 crew.(em / jm)
