British actor Benedict Cumberbatch talks about his new film, “The Courier”, in which he plays a spy, in an interview with the Associated Press news agency Wednesday (17/3). On that occasion, he also gave new information about his other film, the second Dr. Strange.
Benedict Cumberbatch says his recently released film “The Courier” shows that anyone can be a hero.
“I don’t know about this story, but the attraction is how everyone turns into a hero. How an ordinary person does something really extraordinary. How he is asked, coaxed, seduced and, on the one hand, generally blackmailed, but then comes out defending the country , as well as the safety of his family and the safety of the world, did something he had never done before.”
The film is based on the true story of a British businessman, who is unknowingly recruited into one of the most significant international conflicts in history. He befriends a Soviet officer who hopes to prevent a nuclear war between America and Russia by providing him with vital intelligence used to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.
“To then be asked to risk everything for something that has nothing to do with him is, really, amazing. I think that’s what’s universally appealing about the kind of story that transcends the spy film genre,” commented Cumberbatch.
In an interview with the Associated Press, although reluctant, Cumberbatch also gave a little hint about the sequel to his other two films, Dr. Strange, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
“I open my mouth and all sorts of problems can happen, but, yes, I’m usually pretty good at keeping secrets. But what I can tell you is that the shooting of the film has been going on since before last Christmas and that’s a challenge in this time of pandemic because, I I’m sure you guys know from other productions and life in general.”
“But, it’s amazing, the effort that people are willing to put in to stay safe, the sacrifices they make to make filming run smoothly and also prepare the crew and cast. And, yes, the film is going to work. It’s been fun working with Sam (Raimi). great energy and humor. So we had a lot of fun. I hope the film is good because we obviously enjoyed producing it,” added Cumberbatch.
The film “The Courier” has limited screenings starting March 19. [ka/ab]
