Lionel Messi officially joined the football star-studded club, Paris St Germain (PSG), on Tuesday (10/8), after he left Barcelona, where he started his career.
In a statement on its website, PSG announced that the six-time winner of the European Footballer of the Year award Ballon d’Or it signed a two year contract with the option of a third year extension.
“I can’t wait to start a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain,” Messi was quoted as saying by PSG.
“I am determined to build something special for this club and the fans. And I look forward to setting foot at the Parc des Princes.”
The move will strengthen PSG’s already strong attacking line, which includes Brazilian footballer Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, World Cup champion France. Messi himself is one of the best footballers of his generation.
The arrival of Barcelona’s record goalscorer will strengthen PSG’s ambition, which is owned by Qatar, to win the prestigious and lucrative European Champions League. Throughout his career at Barcelona, the Argentine athlete scored 672 goals.
“He doesn’t hide his desire to continue competing at the highest level and winning championships. And of course, our ambition as a club is to do the same,” PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Messi arrived in Paris on the same day with his wife and three children. He briefly waved at the fans who were waiting outside the airport before being taken to a private hospital for a health check. [ft]
