Asian Para Games Officially Opened

President Joko Widodo, Saturday (6/10) night, officially opened the 2018 Asian Para Games at the Gelora Bung Karno main stadium, Jakarta.

Shortly before opening the event, Jokowi tweeted, “The 2018 Asian Para Games, starting tomorrow, will feature 18 sports. From archery, chess, tennis, to swimming. There are also special branches such as boccia for athletes with limited motor skills, and goal ball for the visually impaired. Happy competing.”

The beauty of diversity became the big theme of the opening ceremony which was enlivened by thousands of athletes. The Antara news agency reported that visitors and athletes were “invited to follow the journey of the entire series of events through the beauty of its citizens, forms, and cultural diversity that Jakarta has.”

This is in accordance with the statement of the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee (Inapgoc) Raja Sapta Oktohari who said 30 million out of 263 million people in Indonesia have disabilities.

“However, physical differences are a form of diversity in Indonesia, as well as differences in ethnicity, religion and language,” said Raja Sapta.

He further said that this sporting event was held when Indonesia was hit by a series of natural disasters in Lombok and Central Sulawesi, “but we have made up our mind and made this event a success, so that it can be a source of solace and a new spirit for our brothers and sisters who are being afflicted by the disaster. natural disaster,” he said.

This is the first time Indonesia has hosted the largest sports event in Asia for people with disabilities. Previous events were held in China in 2010 and South Korea in 2014. [em]
